watts towers

watts towers was build by simon rodia, an italian immigrant, over the course of 33 years from 1921 to 1954 in the watts district of los angeles.  in its construction, rodia  used steel pipes, wire mesh and mortar to construct the towers, two of which reach over 90ft in height.  the structures are decorated with found objects such as bottles, tiles, sea shells, and metal scraps and were build without any special design or equipment.
the site is an example of american naive art and became a national historic landmark in 1990.
